A GOLDEN WEDDING. (BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) OAMARU, Aug. 1. Air. James Mitchell, of the Oamaru Mail, and Mrs Mitchell, celebrated their goilden wedding yesterday. Last night the occasion was taken to make him iv presentation of an illuminated address signed by the heads of all local bodies in the district in recognition of the help given in forwarding everything tending to the community’s welfare during the forty-eight yea-rsi of •his residence in O'amiaru. Air. Mitchell was the recipient of handsoinfe presents from the proprietors and all the employees- of the Mail. APPEAL ALLOWED. WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. T!he Appeal Court has given its decision in the Morgan versus Wright and Nosworthy case. The appeal was allowed, Sir Robert Stout dissenting. WELLINGTON TRAAI FARES. WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. The Alayor states that, so far, the reduction in long distance tram fares to 3d has resulted in a slight increase in revenue instead of the anticipated loss. “WIG-WAG”. SIGNALS. WELLINGTON, Aug.- 1. The Railway Department has informed the Farmers’ Conference that automatic “Wig-wag” signals would be installed a.t all dangerous crossings. WIRELESS. AND LIGHTHOUSES. WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. Puysegur Point lighthouse is now connected by wireless, obviating a. long telephone line through the bush, which was constantly breaking down. Stephens Island lighthouse in Cook Strait will be the next to receive a wireless installation. SAWMILL BURNT. HASTINGS, Aug. 1. R. Holt and Co.’s sawmill, near the centre of Hastings, was completely demolished by fire between 2 and 3 o’clock this morning. Fortunately there was no wind. The brigade did good work in confining the outbreak to the area of origin and saving a large quantity of timber which was stacked in the yard. The structure contained up-to-date machinery as well as timber, the whole valued at over £5,000. All was destroyed. It was insured for £I2OO fn the South British. CHRISTCHURCH ITEAIS. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 1. Following the firmer market at London, retail prices of butter locally hav e been raised one penny per pound since last week. t The number of unemployed in Christchurch has fallen from 280 to 164.
