SECONDARY INDUSTRIES.
DEVELOPMENT IN DOMINION
SELF-RELIANT POLICY SUC GESTED.
(BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION .) WELLINGTON, July 31.
Speaking at the opening of the Winter Show, the Governor-General referred to the narrow margin between exports and imports, and expressed the opinion that New Zealand should become a more self-dependent country. Raw material was here, and more textile and leather goods should be used instead of imported articles. Secondary industries should develop in New Zealand as the population increased, but they should not be pushed forward with undue haste so long as the land remained available for settlement •and development. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister for Lands, speaking on behalf of the Gov.’eminent, said that his first duty was to look after the primary producers, but. this country would never take' its -right place in the Pacific unless, by the side of the primary industry, there grew up industrial production. The primary producing countries of the ■world were passing through difficult times, and the primary producer was handicapped by the fact that he had to .dispose of his produce in markets over which he had no control. Secondary industries had to be protected in order to become firmly established, and he hoped to see them make great progress in the future.
