CYCLE ROAD RACE.

WON BY GRIFFIN

The annua] cycle road race held under the auspices of the Hawera Amateur /Athletic Club', was run under ideal conditions this afternoon. There was practically no wind other than a. faint breeze, which was rather more welcome to the competitors than otherwise. The roads were all in excellent condition and the times put up very creditable. The route laid out for the race was from the Post Office, along Glover Road to the Waihi Road and thence to Noramnby, along to Okaiawa. The return was made along the Scott Road to the South Road, finishing up at the Post Office.

There were twenty-two starters, the limit getting off smartly at 24.30 p.m. and the scratch man leaving at 2.40 p.m.

Just before 3.25 n.m. Griffin appeared from South Road with Stening following. There was a fine finish with Griffin about 50 yards ahead of Stening. Griffin finished at 3.24 35secs.

The order of finishing for the first three places was: — C. Griffin (Hawera), 4min., X H. Stening, 4m in 2 G. 12. Cookslev fP.N.), 4min. 3 Griffin’s time was 45min. ssec.

The race held last Labour Day was won bv J. P. Cronin i n 51min. 45sec. actualv riding time. R. Tippetts secured fastest time with 51mins.
