SARGENT’S PICTURES.
HUGE PRICES OBTAINED. SENSATIONAL SALE AT CHRISTIE’S. SY CAlil.K —PKBriS ASSOCIATION—C.OPYBIGHT LONDON, July 27. The sensational sale of the contents of Sargent’s studio has been completed. Christie’s was again crowded with European and American buyers. Successful bids totalled 10,000 guineas per hour, though most of the works were only copies of Velasquez’s and Hals’s and other well-known paintings which had been lying about the studio for years. A copv of Velasquez’s “Hilanderas” sold for 1900 guineas, a copy of a head by Hals for 1350 guineas. The prices suggest the value of the original masterpiece. Other offerings, slight sketches of Sargent’s own work, including decorations for the Boston Museum, sketches of a Bedouin chief brought 3400 guineas.—A. and N.Z. Assn.
Christie’s sale of Sargent’s pictures totalled £175,260.
