EXIT THE LIBERALS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —One can sympathise to a certain extent with your correspondent, ‘•Liberal,” who does not like the change from the old “Liberal” party to the new “Nationalist” party. ' Our member, Mr Corrigan, may have said, as another correspondent, “Bonehead,” suggests: “So long as Jim Corrigan lives there will be one Liberal left.” No one really took him seriously, and no one would" dream of keeping him to that pledge. We know also from Mr Wilford’s announcement that the members of his party were unanimous for the change over, so we can assume that our member is now a “Nationalist.” Your correspondent therefore should come into the “Nationalist” ranks out of the political cold. Your correspondent further asks if there is anv connection between the old Irish Nationalist Party and the new New Zealand Nationalist Party. As an old Irish Nationalist I think I can assure him: no formal alliance, but what in the language of State diplomacy is . called an “entente cordiale.” It is to be regretted that in some parts of New Zealand our Irish Nationalists are coquetting with the Labour Party, but not here in Taranaki, I am pleased to say, where we have a very fine type of nationals. This is due perhaps not so much to the fine type aforesaid as to the excellent guidance and training we receive. As a fellow Celt said to me a. few days ago, when there was a possibility of a fusion of Liberals and Reformers, “We can’t support this Labour Party, these Socialists and extremists, as misguided Celts in other places unfortunately seem to be doing. We have been too well trained for that. We can’t belie our training. Our support must be given to the Fusion Party, by whatever name it calls itself.” And, I agreed. I must franklv confess that the new name “National” for Mr Wilford’s nartv is rather a joke, and that old Liberal papers like the Auckland Star, the New Zealand Times and the Lyttelton Times have been sarcastic over the change. But what does that matter to ns? Whoever heard of a- real Irishman deserting a losing cause? Never! —I am, etc.. IRISH NATIONALIST. Hawera.

AMERICA AND EVOLUTION

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I read with, great pleasure the letter from your correspondent “Rationalist” in the Friday edition of Tile Star. To my mind the most telling part of his letter is contained in the hrst sentence of the last paragraph, in which he says: “It is almost shocking to find that even in this modern age those who teach, evolution in certain countries are treated as criminals.” I would go further and say: It IS shocking! And we are one quarter of the way through the twentieth century. Are the young people to be deprived of the knowledge gained for mankind; by the lifetime studies of such men (to mention only a few) as Darwin, Huxley, Spencer, Tyndall, etc.? It makes one think that the anti-evolu-tionists are out to damn at its birth any fresh knowledge that may differ from their own particular beliefs. I am glad to see that popular lectures on scientific subjects (such as Mr. P. O’Dea gave last week at Manaia) are on the increase, and trust they will become increasingly attractive. Allow me to congratulate yon on the excellence of The Star, which, for its size, I consider to be now equal to any newspaper in the North Island. I am, etc., RATIONALIST No. 2. Hawera.

(To the Editor)

Sir, —It- is not my wish to enter into any controversy, but the subject matter, “America and Evolution,” as presented by “Rationalist” in Friday’s issue of the Star impels me with an honest desire to vindicate Jehovah’s honour, and 1 on'y wish that run abler pen than mine could give it the justice it demands. Quoting from “Rationalist”: “The will of God has many times opposed scientific progress. \et science has triumphed and the Divine Will lias been forced to retire into the background.” Tf history were not repeating itself “in the darkness that covers the earth and gross darkness the people,” one would be amazed with the flippancy with which “Rationalist” speaks of the Divine Will. It is the same gross darkness which has caused many to lose faith in God and His Word", because the rulers of this world —ecclesiastical. political and financial —are of darkness, the chief ruler being Satan. He has been the prince of this world for many centuries by Jehovah’s permission, and for a specific purpose. For this reason He (Jehovah) lias' never interfered with flic world’s affairs, in so far as thev did not conflict with His Divine Will re His plan of salvation for all mankind to be satisfied in due time —I. Tim., 2:6. At His first advent th e Master said : “Shall the Son find faith in the earth ?” showing that it was then almost extinct. The same is true now at His second advent. In these last days we have “scoffers walking after their own lusts. “For men shall be lovers, of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemous, traitors, beady, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God, having a form of Godliness, but denying tliep owor thereof.” “Rationalist” will yet see that the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God (for true science never conflicts with tlie Divine W ill). “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”—lsh. 55:9. The theory of evolution, is distinctly opposed to Bible truths re man’s creation. Tt (the Bib’e) does not assert that God created separately and individually the myriad kinds of fish and reptiles, but merely that God’s spirit or power brooded over the waters and the sea brought forth its creatures of various kinds, the same being equal'y true of the land creatures. The process of these evolving or developing are not revealed in the Bible or in the rocks, so it is unwise to dogmatise. But in the case of man’s creation, God’s Word gives us a clear-cut statement. that it is a distinct and separate one. And God said: “Let us make man in our own image, etc.” The plural here shows that He was conversing with His only Sen, the Logos, or Word, as He then was, and He was the one and only direct creation of Jehovah. (See Col'. 1:15. 16, 17: Rev. 3:14; St. John 1 : 1-3. Man was made an earthly image of His Creator, morally and intel'ectually, that he might be a. suitable ruler of earth.

The evidences everywhere are only too patent that the Bible is no longer treated with the honour and respect that it fully deserves (though it is the most up to date that we have), and even many who do. not uphold it from

Genesis to Reve’ation sadly misunderstand its beautiful teachings; and Jehovah’s character, with its wonderful attributes of justice, wisdom, love and rower is woefully misrepresented and blasphemed. Truly our God has been remarkably long-suffering'-,and forbearing in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation; but now His fiery judgments are being poured upon the earth and His righteous indignation upon the people, which will result in the greatest cataclysm the world has ever seen or known —Dan. 12:1. And it in turn wiP give place to the glorious Messianic Kingdom foretold by all God’s prophets, and then will “Rationalist” have an opportunity of fuPy understanding the Divine Will and the nrincinles of righteousness. In that time “n~ man shall say. Know ye the Rord? For al 1 shall know Him, from the least unto the greatest.’’ For the whole earth shall he covered with God’s f dorv as the waters cover the sea. God’s will wi’J then b« done on earth even as if is done in Heaven. Let God lie . true, though it- make nv erv man a liar ('particularly evolutionists). Rom. 3:4.—1 am. etc. „ BIBLE. STUDENT.
