WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN

BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Julv 27, 12.15 p.m. NEW YORK, July 26. A message from Dayton states that William Jennings Bryan is dead.

William Jennings Bryan, the American politician;, was horn on March 19, 1860. He graduated at Illinois College and bacame a barrister in this being his father’s profession. For a few years he practised at Jacksonville, and m 1891 wus returned to the House of Representatives as a • Democrat, having made a .reputation by his speeches in the campaign of 1888. During the next foui years he ardently supported the cause of bimetallism. In 1896 his party selected him as a candidate for the presidency; the convention at Chicago w-as more, thifm usually divided and excited when Bryan addressed them in the memorable oration which contained the phrase about crucifying mankind oil a cross of _ gold. He was, however, beaten by McKinley, as lie was also in 1900, being in these years the acknowledged leader of the bcmociats. He denounced the acquisition of the .Philippine Islands, and again stood for the free coinage of si 1 - ver. It- was .in .1.900, too. that lie founded and edited a weekly paper, The Commoner. Brvan failed to secure nomination in 1904, but in 1908 he was again an unsuccessful candidate, his apponent being W. H. Taft. He was largely responsible for the nomination of Woodrow Wilson at the convention in 1912. after whose election Bryan became Secretary of State until JL9IS, when he resigned. He took a prominent part in the recent prosecution at Dayton. Tennessee, of the school teacher John Scopes.
