BIBLES STILL BANNED.

IN SOVIET RUSSIA

Whether the British and Foreign Bible Society should lie allowed to print the .Bible in Soviet Russia is discussed by the Society in its annual report. “In marked contrast to China,” says the report, “the importation of the Scriptures into the Soviet Republic (from Petrograd to A'ladivostock) is still forbidden.

“All endeavours to gain an entrance into Russia have failed. Yet the Russian people have not lost their love for the Scriptures. Instances are recorded of Siberian peasants who would willingly give a cow for a Bible.” M. Ilakovskv, the Russian Charge d’Affairs at Chesham House. London, says that in Russia anybody could preach the Bible. “That is not- forbidden,” he said, “but it requires at present a special permit from the Soviet Government for anyone, especially if they belong to another country, to go there and print it. “I think, however,” he added, “that the whole question of religion in Russia is being gone into.” Tn Turkey the Society’s operations arc now confined to Constantinople and its immediate surroundings. “On the whole the Turkish authorities- have been well disposed, and the circulation has doubled. Plans for the Bible House on the site acquired in Jerusalem have been prepared and building will soon commence,” the report adds.
