RIFFS LOSING GROUND

FRENH ATTACKS EFFECT.IVJ'

PARIS, July 24

The Moroccan situation, summed up, is that Abd-el-Krim is losing ground front both a military and a political standpoint. Le Temps' says the Riffian withdrawal north of the- Wergha indicates that Krim is anxious to avoid -the battle rendered imminent by the arrival of French reinforcements. He knows the difficulties of French pursuit into the mountains and thus hopes to gain time to open negotiations. A message from Fez states that a French mobile force advanced along both banks of the Wergha, despite resistance from the enemy, who were driven back, losing many prisoners. This successful action cleared a broad . n of country seventy-five kilometres northward of .Fez, and greatly impressed the natives.

Later reports state that French attacks effective'y relieved the pressure at Fez and Taza. Plans for the main offensive are being prepared, but the delay in launching them is due to awaiting reinforcements and the French policy of offering peace terms under a time limit.
