SARTORIAL HOAX.
BALLOON TROUSERS FAD. u’OY'H.i GHOriXO NY Students of Oxford University are sitting back and enjoying hearty chuckles on the successful sartorial hoax which they have perpetrated on the young bloods of Great Britain and the United States, and, to a much lesser extent, on some of the overseas Dominions’ Beau Brummels. The far - famed Oxford Balloon trousers, it is now becoming known, were conceived in the fertile mind of an undergraduate as a “rag,” and with due solemnity the leaders of fashion at an ancient English university seat gradually increased the dimensions of their nether garments until they reached the proportions of skirts. Young men who ape Oxford fashions.“fell for” the innovation, and it spread across England, jumped the Atlantic andean like wildfire through the youth of The United States. VOGUE IN AMERICA. In America the tendency towards the wide trousers is very noticeable among tlie younger set. The American youths favour light blue cloth, and sport re a ties and .red socks. They are quite confident that they can equal, the best Oxford produced. Now comes news from England that it has been a “rag.” The Oxford students are dropping the fashion and in other circles public ridicule is doing the work. Writing in the London Daily Mail, Rebecca. West says: “I have known women so feminine as to want to wear a skirt. But 1 have never known them to want to wear skirts like the Oxford trousers.” WAS TAKEN SERIOUSLY. An indication of how seriously England took the fashion is found in tailors’ advertisements quoting prices on the balloon garment. Tlie craze was honoured by receiving treatment in Punch, a cartoon showing two burly bluejackets leaning over the rail of a battleship wearing skin-tight trousers instead (of the traditional, “bell-bot-toms” of the senior service. The cartoon was called “Retaliation.”
Now Oxford is returning to “normalcy” while thousands of American youths have stocked up with the baggy garment.
