At Dayton Mr. Harrow, the counsel for the defence in the trial of (Scopes, was cited for contempt of court by the presiding judge (Judge Raulston), who. at the opening of the court to-day, charger! Sir. Da now with .showing contempt and with adopting an insulting manner on Friday during :« heated exchange over the introduction of .scientific evidence, in which he virtually defied Judge Raulston and questioned Iris im|wu tiality. The penalty is a fine or imprisonment, and there is no appeal from the judge’s decision, in such cases. Mr. Harrow, under a five thousand dollars bond, is required to answer the citation to-morrow. Affidavits of nine prominent iscientific educators and clergymen who intended to give testimony for the defence were not read, but wore entered in the court record. The attorneys for the proention and the defence prepared alternately their closing arguments. • The defence has, already prepared an appeal from the verdict of guilty, which is expected to he. given to-morrow. —Aus.-N.Z. ' Air Darrow apologised to the judge, who shook hands and dismissed the contempt charge. He then ordered- the courtroom to be emptied, owing to the danger of its collapse, cracks having opened in the ceiling and the. floor below, and the courtroom stairs were showing signs of giving away. The trial was reconvened on the lawn, the judge and counsel occupying a platform erected for the evangelists.—A. and N.Z. Assn.
