Women, in conforming; to the everchanging vagaries of fashion, bring rnin to some trades and prosperity to others. Kashion, even in trifling ways, inis its influence. The shopkeepers of Sydney have said nothing, for instance, about the slump in the hairpin trade, since the advent of the bobbed and shingled heads, for the reason probably that it has been more than counterbalanced by women’s offerings to the despotic goddess in some more expensive form, dut the hairpin trade in Sydney has fallen like a house of cards. The secret was revestSed by a struggling storekeeper in evidence at the Police Court. The young woman lamented that to sell sixpenny packets of hairpins nowadays at their proper retail price was impossible, and, that even at twopence sales of packets ordinarily priced at sixpence, were not at all brisk. Thus is trade turned topsy-turvy at the footstool of fashion. JJefore the University Commission at Dunedin, Dr. Pickerill, Director of the Dental School, stated that tho estimated New Zealand requirements at present were 20 to 25 dental graduates annually, but within 20 years the school would require to deal with double that number. Instead of duplicating the special schools he recommended the Education Department to establish bursaries sufficient to cover travel costs and incidental expenses of students who are non-residents of Dunedin. the bursaries being directly proportionate to distance. Dr. Pickerill also stated that it would be necessary to give consideration' to extending the research post graduate work, and also the provision of facilities in the new school for the training annually of a small number of girl mechanics. ' Ho mentioned it was hoped to institute a public dental service for Dunedin. Groups of students under supervision, and with the consent of employers, would periodically inspect, chart and repbrt on the conditon of employees of all largo firms.
