RAWHITIROA.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

This district lias spent a quiet winter on the whole, even the football matches with Mata having been played in town. The last was lost by the. local team by 19 points to 14. More changes than usual have taken place lately, and in the “general post,” several families with children have left, and the school mil number has suffered. YVe have now become quite accustomed to the delivery of our daily mail in the mornings. .That and the unfailing regularity of the of the Ha.vvera Star are two of our most appreciated improvements of late. V e are ail looking forward to the next important one, namely, electricity. Most of the residents are interested and will welcome the tim e when it is an accomplished fact. SCHOOL CONCERT.

Events of consequence, have been rather rarer than usual this winter. All the more, then, was Friday night a treat for young and old. The children gave a concert in aid of their school library fund, and were fortunate in striking the best of weather. It goes without saying that all the local people are interested in these events, and the attendance was increased bv the running of a free lorry from Eltham. The programme of performances by the children was‘ varied by songs, recitations and dialogues, and went brightly from start to finish. The verdict was that it erred, if anything, on the sid-e of brevity. The items were:— One, nursery rhymes, songs and action by the tinies. Two. recitation “Good and Bad Children,” Goryll Phillips. Three, action song “The Bees.” Four, dialogue, “‘Darby and Joan,” by Ernie Phillips and Gwen Silver with E. Terry as a fairy. Five, part song ‘Merry June,” which wag particularly good. Six, dialogue “Noughts and Crosses,” in which the parts of king, queen and chamberlain were taken by E. Major, Lorna McDonald and J. Genilioofer. Seven, “Are you going to -Waltz” ? duet by Elliott Major and Lorna McDonald, which received the most decided encor© of the evening. Eight, song “Elf’-s Lullaby” by the girls. Nine, “March song” by the boys. Ten, “ Good-night Song,” bringing the concert to a close.

The children had their share of dancing for a timee; then all enjoyed the plentiful supper provided by the ladies. Mr. Wallace Major’s music and a. few extras kept the young people dancing gaily for some hours. The hall had been prettily decorated by the children with coloured streamers and greenry which Mr. D. May kindly helped them to get The library fund.will benefit considerably by the proceeds of the concert. Yfr. May was M.C. SCHOOLS’ FORESTRY.

In the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs root competitions' at the recent Hawera Show, our children, though they won no championships, carried off a good share of prizes. At th e request of the school committee Mr. R. Svme gave the children an instructive address on forestry, and it is hoped that next year something wiil he done in the way of growing pines and gums. People are' realising the need for more tree planting than has been done of late.
