STILL IDLE.
SHIPPING AT DUNEDIN
(BY TELEGRAPH- —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN, July 19.
The position on the waterfront remains unchanged. A caill was made at 7.45 a.m. on Saturday for labour for the collier Kawatiri, when a large number of waterside workers were present, but there was no response. There are five vessels now idle, the Kawatiri, kanaka, Kamo, Breeze and Kotare. The employers’ representatives asked the union to meet them in conference on Saturday morning. At this conference the representatives of the union stated that the great majority of its members had decided not to depart from' the. position they had adopted in regard to the Kawatiri, and as a result of this statement no further progress was made towai'ds a settlement of the trouble.#? The employers state that so far. us they know Newcastle coal is being worked at other ports in New Zealand at the rate of pay prescribed in the award. The contention of the employers is that in the present instance there is no dispute technically. The proper course, they state, is for the men to •start work] and then, if they have a complaint, they have the right to refer the matter in the form of a dispute to the local disputes committee. DUNEDIN, July 20. There is no sign of a settlement of / the waterfront trouble. . A call tins morning for the Kawatiri was disregarded by two hundred wharfies who were present. Agents for the Kotare, acting on the Invercargill owners’ instructions,, made a call for the discharge of her timber. One gaiifT was engaged. The Wanaka has 120 tons of sugar aboard. A shortage in this commodity is becoming apparent.
