PERSONAL HEMS.

Mr Robert Williamson, manager for J. C. Williamson, Ltd., arrived in town last evening to make the preliminary arrangements for the appearance here' on Wednesday, July 9, of the great Russian actor, Maurice Moscovitch, in “The Outsider.” At the monthly meeting of the Otakeho school committee a motion of sympathy with the head teacher j(Mrs. Evans) in the recent loss of her husband was carried in silence, members standing.

Visitors to Hawera during the last few days have included Mr Arthur Rip- . of Auckland, and Mr W. E. Caldow, secretary of the Wellington Choral Society. Mr Ripley went north on Wednesday and sang the tenor ■solos at the New Plymouth Chora] Society last night. At the annual meeting of the Clydesdale Hofse Society of New Zealand, a vote of sincere condolence was passed with Mrs. Massey on the death of the late Prime Minister, who, said the chairman, had been for many years a member of "the society.

Mr. W. Gilbert, jun., who, for the past nine years, has been a member of the staff employed in liis father’s grocery business at Hawera, was recently met ‘by liis op-workers, who presented him with a handsome wallet and pipe. Mr. S. Harrison, who made the presentation, spoke of the high esteem in which Mr. Gilbert was held by all, and wished him every success in his new sphere. Mr. Gilbert, who is leaving to take up a position in the Public Trust Office at Wellington, suitably replied. Dr. Derek Denny Brown, a New Zealander, has been elected to a junior fellowship under the Beit Memorial. He will take up three years’ research at Oxford in spastic paralysis and allied conditions. Dr. D. Denny Brown is a son of Mr and Mrs C. Denny Brown, of New Plymouth. He received his secondary education at the New Plymouth Bovs’ High School, and after winning a Taranaki scholarship gained hi<? medical degree at Otago University, where he distinguished himself as a brilliant student. He went to_ England last year to further his studies.
