ALLEGED THEFT. (.BY - TELEGRAPH- —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, July 16. George William Thorpe was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with stealing five sums of money totalling £23 2s 6d from his employers, C. W. Pmce and Co., Ltd., auctioneers; also with forgery of receipts -and altering two receipts. Chief Detective Kemp stated that the accused, prior to June- 36, was .'manager of Price’s Company, which Was formed into a limited liability company 'last year, the accused and his wife each taking £250 worth of shares. The accused, as manager, did most of the buying oil behalf of the- company, his dealings being mostly in secondhand furniture. For the first si x months the business -showed a loss, which made the directors suspicious. The detective- said that apparently the accused bought furniture from people, paying for it : out of bis own pocket. Then- he returned to the office, naming a price in excess of what he- had paid, taking the difference lor himself. The charges relating to forgeries dealt with receipts- signed by the vendors, and bogus receipts given by the accused to the office in respect to- the same -goods, showing higher figures. The- accused pleaded not guilty and was committed l for trial. MOTHER’S SHOCKING DISCOVERY AUCKLAND, July 16, Ernest Roy Aspden, aged 21, a seaman, was found dead by his mother at her residence at Birkenhead, hanging to the foot of the bed. He was quite dead. A leather strap round his neck was fastened to the bed post. Though he was out of work he showed no tendency to commit suicide. His rash act cannot be accounted for. TRAMWAY APPEAL BOARDS. WELLINGTON, July 16. A request that representatives of unions appointed to sit on tramway appeal hoards should receive sonic payment for their services was made to the Prime Minister to-day by a deputation from the Tramway Employees’ Federation Mr! Coates, in his reply, indicated that he could see difficulties ahead, hut would have the matter inquired into. He would go carefully into the matter arid let the federation know the result of his deliberations.
