THE SCOPES TRIAL.

FIRST STAGE NEARLY OVER, JUDGE HOLDS LAW CONSTITUTIONAL. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received July 16, 0.50 p.m. NEW YORK, July 15. The trial of Scopes at Dayton is practically over, so far as the County Court is concerned. The presiding judge declares in a lengthy statement that the Tennessee law prohibiting teaching evolution is constitutional. The defence admits that Scope s violated this law. Therefore it remains only for the jury to be instructed to return a verdict of guilty. A fight upon the constitutionality of the law will be mad© in an appeal to a higher coui't. It is probable, however, that before the trial actually ends there will he many speeches delivered; and possibly expert testimony will be taken.
