HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. tBY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, July 14. The House of representatives met at 2.30 pirn, to-day. A large number of petitions were presented praying for the licensing of bookmakers. Replying to Mr. W. S. Glenn (Rangitikei), the Hon. Sir M. Pomare said the Public Health Department was wide awake and would seek to obtain all information at once regarding the reported discovery of the cause of cancer. Mr. W. E. Parry (Auckland Central) moved for leave to introduce a Miners’ Phthisis Bill, which provided for the appointment of a medical referee, and in this connection he urged that only referees be appointed who had previous experience of the disease. The Bill also made provision for : (1) People afflicted with miners’ phtisis irrespective of the manner in which they acquired it; (2) for raising miners’ pensions; (3) medical comforts for those afflicted. The Minister for Mines (Hon. G. J. Anderson) -said he hoped- one day to have a comprehensive Act placed on the Statute Book dealing with all pension cases. At present a miner was treated better than other pensioners (though he did not mean by : -this that he received as much as was desirable) and represented only a -small portion of the number in receipt of pensions. The Bill was read a first time.
The debate on the Add re ss-i mile p 1 y was continued by Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister for Lands, Mr. L. Mcllvride, (Napieiq Mr. G. R. Sykes, (Masterton). The House adjourned at 10.30 p.m.
