CHILDREN'S FANCY DRESS BALL. This long-looked-t’or event was held in Alanaia. Town Hall o„ Friday night-, and was one of the best functions that has been held in Manilla for many years. The hall, which was crowded 'with children in their respective fancy dresses, was beautifully decorated. Ino grand march was well worth going a long distance to see, for over children, took part, the different costumes making a very pretty Pictnie. The children, who were well tutored »/ Mrs ,T. Christie, are to he complimented on the thorough manner in which they executed this important opening, also in all the various dance s m which they had been taught. Mrs Christie had a big undertaking, but her work was excellently carried out, and she is to bo heartily complimented and deserving ol the thanks of al parents. During the evening the various -sections were judged. This important matter was in the hands of Air and Airs C. Paterson, of Kapuni. They had a very strenuous undertaking piloting the* different prizes, hut the judging met with hearty approval. The following was the prize list: — Children, 1 year to 5, girls.-—Miss D. Junes (fairy), 1; Miss Gronne Hayter (Teddy Bear), 2. Boys: Jack Jeromesou. Boys: Jack Christie (lizard), 1; Darcy \ernon (Indian), 2. Children, 12 years to 16 years.— Girls: Kathleen Cosgrove (harem lady) 1; Margie Howell (crinoline lady), 2. Boys: Rhody Horgan (oldest inhabitant), 1; Andrew Hansen (Botirneville cocoa) 2. . Returned Soldiers’ special.—Aliss K. Hesey (Arabian princess). Judges’ special. Dorris McCook (birthday cake). Hawei'a Star’s special, girl’s poster dress.—ALiss D. Corrigan (baking powder). Boys: Lennie Landers (Three Castle Cigarettes). Waimate Witness’ special. —Aliss AL Cosgrove (house to let). -Spot waltz.—Aliss Kathleen Cosgrove and Aladge Julian. A sumptous supper was provided for the children also for adults by the ladies’ committee, Airs. A. J. Hansen in charge, and the ladies are to lie complimented on the very able manner in. which they entered for the .large attendance.

Alessrs. A. J. Hansen and A. West ably-carried out the duties of Al’sC. Air E. Long, chairman of the 'Waimate West County Council, presented the prizes to the winners, and congratulated them on their splendid make-up. The various committees are to be commended in having every detail in perfect order. In this connection special mention should be made of the work of the secretary, Air. C. Franklin. He worked very hard and had all details in connection with his department in complete order. The committee of the ALanaia Municipal Brass Band offer its sincere thanks to the ladies’ committee, also to Alls. J. Christie for teaching the children; to all who had generously made donations for the prizes, also to the returned soldiers who had placed the children’s fancy dress hall at the band’s disposal. The takings for the evening were close on £4O, and it is expected there will be a credit balance after paying expenses. The splendid music which helped to make the ball such a success was rendered by Aliss Neilson, and Air. Lloyd for the children, and an orchestra consisting of Alessrs. Abbot, Lloyd, lioddinott, and 3iakington, played for the adults. These worthy musicians very kindly offered their assistance and the grateful, thanks of the committee are due to them.
