TENNIS CLUB’S BALL
The first .annual ball of the Jliverlea Tennis Club was held on Thursday evening last, and turned out in every way a most enjoyable and successful function. The fialL was crowded with dancers, who evinced their pleasure, by the fact that when the hist dance was called at about 2.30 a.m. there was scarcely any appreciable diminution in the number of couples on the floor. A most excellent and bountiful suppei, provided by the ladies, oi the district, was laid out hi the supper room, and full justice was done theieto by the large crowd present. 'The hall and tables were effectively and prettily decorated with coloured streamers ’and papers, tree-ferns, holly and flowers, and the floor was in excellent condition. The music provided by Boulton's orchestra was quite up to its usual excellent standard and kept the dancers going with the swing which all ,so much enjoy. Their appreciation of the music was shown by the fact that encores were called for every dance, and in one case four times in succession.
Great interest was taken in the waltzing competitions, and there were many entries. In those events the maiden competition was won by Mr. and Mrs. Hardaker, of Rowan, and the open waltz by Mr. G. Thompson, of Million, and Mrs. Evans, of Auroa. Mr. E. Tremain was judge, and that his decisions were good was shown by the very hearty applause which greeted the announcement of ' the winners. In the fancy dresses the first prize for fancy dress (ladies) went to Mrs. AYoodihead, of Rowan, as “Maori IValiiue,’’ and for the most original to Mix's. Ludd. The gentlemen’s prize was won by Messrs. 10. Gibbons and F. Schmidt a>s “Ring Boys.’’ After supper Mr. A. JO. Mills (president of the 'Pennis Club) thanked those present- for their attendance, and announced that the Rowan Tennis Club was holding a dance on the loth and that the R.ivcrlea Hall Committee would be holding one on Wednesday, 22nd. and that Boulton’s Orchestra, which he complimented on its excellent music, was supplying the music in both cases. He also thanked the ladies for their assistance, and stated that the takings at the door for the evening were .22d 12s. and the total hver £3O, the club probably benefiting by nearly £2O when everything was ■finished up. PERSONAL. It is with great pleasure that local residents note that Jimmie Carbis is reported to be doing well, and we all hope to soon see him, back again. There have been some changes here this year. Messrs. Campbell Bros.. AV. Cassidy. Kelly, Sadler and Humphries have left and Mr. J. Webby will be leaving shortly. Mr. Sadler has gone to Inaha, Mr. Kelly to Stratford. Mr. Cassidy near Opunake and Mr. Webby goes; to Auroa. All have been here some time ; in fact, 1 believe Mr. Cas’sidy was born here and Mr. Webby has been here about eighteen years. I do not know Mr. Humphries’ destination. All tv ill be missed by friends and acquaintances.
