INQUEST DRAMA

STREET GANG’S VICTIM

One hundred and fifteen witnesses —including seventy for the defence — are to be called at the inquest on the Sheffield man. William Plommer, who was fatally stabbed in a street melee, following ~ which eleven men were arrested.

These men were present in the Coroner’s Court. They are: Wifrcd Fowler (23), Lawrence Fowler (25), Frank Kidnew (40), George Wills (22). Frederick Goddard ’(24) Amos Stewart (21), Samuel Garvin (36), Robert Henry Garvin (39), William Furness (34), Stanley Harker (23), William Wild (28). Dramatic scenes occurred.during the evidence. When the widow, Elizabeth Plommer. wa s in the box, she wa s asked to identify any of the accused men. Suddenly fixing her gaze on one of them, she pointed her finger at him and said, in a broken voice, “You Sobbing she fell back into the arms of a policeman, leaving the sentence unfinished. Earlier she had told of an attack on her husband by seven or eight men. Plommer shouted to the men, “Come on. one at a time.” William Holden saw the attack on Plommer, and urged him to escape, as he had not a chance against so many. “But lie stood like a hero and fought them all,” said Holden. “Had he taken them on one by one be could have settled the whole ga‘ng.“ 31 rs. Rose Lem. who lives in Princes Street, where Plommer met his fcath, swung round in the witness-box and. pointing at the brothers Fowler, exclaimed in a voice ringing with indignation : ‘Won and you pinned him when he slipped on the tramway.” and then pointing an accusing finger at Lawrence Fowler, she almost screamed, “and while he was down you Kept jabbing him.” A smile spread over the facc s of the two men. and this increased the woman’s anger. Raising her fist, she shouted. “Don’t grin at me, or 1 will swipe you.” The Inquiry wa s adjourned.
