OP HR A HOUSE—TO-NIG iIT. ‘•THE TORNADO.” Big in its dramatic values, smashing m its conception of the spectacular. -no Tornado,’' a Universal-Jewel stalling House Peters, opened last night at the Opera House to a hig audience. The picture is a line entertainment pi 111a nv ways, but probably its bigger appeal lies in the stupendous scenes depicting the fury of nature as emphasised pi the resistless powers of storm and iiood. Tlie story is particularly good and the cast assisting Ilotiso Peters was evidently very carefully selected. it includes Ruth CliHorn, Kate Price, Suit/. Edwards, and httie Jackie Morgan. This great picture will be repeated this evening ior tho last time. THE GRAND, TO-NIGHT. •‘CHRISTINE OF THE HUNGER HEART. To-night the Grand Theatre will provide high-class entertainment for all picture lovers, “Christine of the Hunjrry Heart/’ is ironi the novel by Kathleen Noras. Most romantic stories end with a wedding, but tins one begins with a marriage, but this is also the beginning of the romance, and leads up to lier greatest sacrifice which finally brings her the happiness that every normal woman seeks. Hie part of Christine is taken by Miss Florence Vidor, and she is supported uy four leading men, not one. 'lliev are Warner Baxter as the unfaithlin husband, Clive Brook as the neglected husband, lan Keith as the poet, and Walter Hiers, who plays fbe part of her sympathetic brotner.
LONG TACK SAM. Judging by the large booking of seats when the box pl an opened this morning at the Opera House confectionery, tlie forthcoming performance by Long Tack Sam and liis new company promises to be a highly successful one. His act is described by a critic as “a spectacular speciality of juggling, balancing, magic. Chinese clown juggling, contortionists, water spinning, and novelties.” Supporting Long Tack Sam is a company oi international vaudeville stars selected from the. cream of vaudeville from J. CWilliamson theatres in Sydney and Melbourne. There are for instance the Noveile Bros., two musical acrobatic clowns, billed in a quaint'and artisticact. Chris Charlton, the Royal illusionist, is assisted by Dorothy Browne, and present an illusion act entitled “Descriptions of 1925.” Errol Addison ancl Gertrude Mitrenga are speciality and classical dancers. Moran and Wiser are billed as the hilarious hat spinners in a sketch. “All in Fun.” The orchestra is under the direction of Mr. A. Gr. Frost. Tlie company’s Auckland season has behn a wonderfully successful one. The critic of the Star says: “Some good things have been produced here but never anything better Ilian thi s great show. ! “WILDFLOWER.” The box plan for the J. C. Williamson opera production “Widfiower,” will be open at Cook’s Confectionery Monday morning next. According to Sydney contemporaries this new play which the J. C. Willamson directors will present at Hawera on Wednesday next. is a really brilliant musical comedy romance, with Miss Marie Burke as the girl who lias to stay sweet-tempered to win a fortune. That this brilliant entertainment sparkles with real fun, that there are many amazing dances and irresistible song numbers. Miss Marie Burke will play “Wildflower,” otherwise ■ “Nina,” a role in which she Was particularly successful in London. An old favourite will be seen in Marie La Varre, also Marjorie Daw is well cast. Gus Bluett will be no doubt warmly welcomed she is a comedian of great quality possessing a real sense of humour. The idea lover is Herbert Browne, .who sings some delightful numbers. Charles Zoli is another newcomer, and is said to be a character comedian of fine English reiiutation. Noel Allan will have a congenial role as “Alberto,” while John Forde, should be “Luigi” to the manner born. A dancing specialty is given by tlie Cansino Brothers and their beautiful lady partner Stoneburn. An augmented orchestra will be under the able conductorship of Mr. Case Downing, the stage management being under the direction of Mr. Frank White.
