CHAOTIC CHINA
CONFERENCE OF POWERS. NOT POSSIBLE AT PRESENT. BRITAIN’S ATTITUDE. BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, July 1. In the House of Commons, replying to Labourite suggestions that Britain should convoke a conference of the Chinese Treaty Powers, including the Chinese, to discuss the whole question of the revision of extra-territorial treaties, Mr Austen Chamberlain (Foreign Secretary) made it clear that the Government is. not only unable to consider such questions until China has established a Government capable of restoring law, order and respect for the treaties, but even a tariff conference under the Washington decisions cannot be held under circumstances in which it might be exposed to anti-foreign demonstrations.
