DAWSON FALLS.
NEW HOSTEL PROPOSED. REPORT OF COMMITTEE. At the last meeting of the Egmont National Park Board, the .question of the bui ding of a new hostel at Dawson Falls was jeonsidefed. Mr‘ B. C. Lysagiit (Hawera County Council) prepresided in the absence of Mr Crump. There were also present: Messrs A. G-. Larcombe (Hawera County Council), C. Goodson and L. A. Bone (Hawera Borough Council), E. Long and A. Gamlin (Waimate West County Council), R. G. Cook and A. R. Bates (Kaponga i own Board), and the secretary, Air N. H. Aloss, of Stratford. The committee reported that it had carried out an exhaustive inspection of the present hostel, and then visited the site of the proposed new building recommended by Mr J. P. Alurphy. The site is situated in ideal surroundings, slightly lower and a little to the left of the existing establishment. The building is on a slight e’evation and affords ample room to build the hostel in the form of an “L,” besides giving sufficient ground in the immediate! vicinitv for the laying down of tennis and croquet courts and a bowling green. The view, Hooking towards the mountain, is without doubt one of the finest for bush and mountain scenery that could possibly be obtained, while, from the front a 'Splendid outlook can be obtained of the plains and. the sea. Speaking on the subject dt tne Hostel yesterday during the visit of the N.D.A. delegates, the chairman of the board (Air T. C. List) said the mountain reserve consisted of 70,000 acres-, mostly of bush, on every side just as beautiful as that the visitors had passed through. Like most other boards, the Egmont Parle Board was hampered by lack of funds, to open up the mountain and display its beauties. The board was doing its best, and had laid plans for the developing of the mountain. They proposed to tar-seal the tracks and rebuild the Dawson Falls Hostel. This of the first works to be undertaken. They needed a hostel with more accommodation, so that on an occasion-such as tlie present the whole party could assemble at once for luncheon. A report on the probable cost of tar-sealing the road would be secured, as the heavy cost of maintenance of" the road is a big tax On the income of the board.
