CITY STRICKEN

DISASTROUS EARTHQUAKE

BIG CASUALTY LIST. SANTA BARBARA SUFFERS. BY GABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received June 30, 10.40 a.m. SAN FRANCISCO, June 29. A message from Los Angeles states that sixty-five people are known to have been killed in a South Californian earthquake, centring at Santa Barbaia. It is believed that at least one hundred perished and several hundreds were injured. Some of the finest buildings were demolished ; railway lines were disrupted and communications cut off. Fire has broken out, and a dam burst, liberating torrents of water and flooding the city. The inhabitants are panicstricken. Aeroplanes from San Francisco and elsewhere and Red Cross trains are rushing to its relief. —Aus.X.Z. Cable Assn.
