RAILWAY FARES.
PROPOSED ALTERATIONS. In tlie course of its review of the railway tariff proposals for dealing with special classes of passenger fares the Railway Department notes the following adjustments: HOLIDAY EXCURSIONS. The board considers that except for minor adjustments, holiday excursion fares should not be further reduced. The minor adjustments are the following:— (1) That the journey may be commenced at any time before the expiry of the period during which the tickets are issuable in each case instead of necessarily on the day which the currency of - the ticket commences. (2) That break ox journeys should he permitted after 25 miles have been travelled, instead of lifty miles as at present. These two occasions will make for a greater degree of elasticity in the use of the tickets and will, to that extent, be meeting a public convenience. (3) That the minimum charge be reduced from 6s first-class and, 4s 2d second-class, to 5s first-class and 3s 5d second-class. The reduction proposed will make the excursion fares operative from fifteen miles upwards. SPECIAL EXCURSION FARES. The board proposes the institution of special , excursion fares, based oh single fare plus 25 per cent, as recommended by -the Railway Commission. They will cover distances from 8 miles to 200 miles, and will be issued at such time as may be determine® by the department. They will, as already indicated, lie between the holiday excursion fares and the day excursion fares, and should readily serve the purpose of fostering such traffic x.s week-end traffic and excursions between selected points. The n there will be day excursion fares (special excursions involving a return journey on the day of starting out). This rate will be about single fare for the return trip. FAMILY TICKETS.
The board proposes the institution of family tickets. The proposal is that for the equivalent of three ordinary adult tickets at ordinary fares or holiday excursion fares (when such are in operation) one or both parents may travel with any number of their «:v>u children under the age of 16 years without further charge.
