PRISONS EMPTIED
THOUSANDS, OF PRISONERS RELEASED'.
CAPETOWN, April 29
Extraordinary scenes here- and in other South African cities marked the release to-day of thousands, of prisoners to whom clemency has been extended in view of the visit- of the Prince of Wales,
A great crowd assembled outside the gaol this, morning, in Capetown. Many Europeans were released first, then half-caste women] in tawdry finery carrying vanity bags, who went away arm- in arm singing “God Bless the Prince of Wales.” Then came hatches of coloured men and natives, some ,carrying suitcases, who were whisked away in motor-cans: by their friends. The only people left in Capetown gaol -are three men condemned to deatn and the long-sentence men.
