In Australia 'Wench was handicapped much above her New Zealand form. The quality of the big majority of the- horses competing in the steeplechases this season is so far not good. At Napier Park ten runners went out for the Petane Steeplechase; of them live ran off and two fell. Waioreka Jack is a wonderfully fast fencer over batten jumps, but is well known as a non-stayer, but .is always hard to beat in a hurdle race run over a mile and a-lialf course, so if a starter over that distance on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay meeting, is worth remembering. ( Nukumai appears as an acceptor for the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, but tlm. gelding may not show his best form till Trentham. When Black Art- fell in the Australian Steeplechase, he struck, the ground very hard, and was very sor© afterwards, so it was decided to ship him back to the Dominion. A lot of money from the correct quarter was lost over Share and Sunny Loch at the Banks Peninsula meeting. Evidently Enare is not as goocf as generally supposed, while Sunny Loch has certainly not- produced his best form. For a considerable time it has been stated that R. Rejd would ride in Australia next season, hut the rider named has again accepted a retainer to ride next season for th© East Coast owner, Mr. A. B. Williams. Jumping horses have been very scarce in the South Island, and quite a number of owners from \ across the Straits are on the look out for suitable jumpers. After racing on the opening day at Napier, Jovial was purchased by Mr. C. 0. Rutherford of Marlborough.
