EASY WIN FOR ENGLAND. MATCH WITH QUEENSLAND. BY CABLE—PRESS RIGHT. BRISBANE, June 20. At the soccer match between England ami Queensland 15,000 were present. Queensland were outclassed, England winning by II goals to nil. England • had the advantage of the Weather. There had been three days of rain, and there were showers during the match. J ilextli halves were played in Queensland territory, the English goal being endangered, half-a-dozen times. England, played an effective game, showing wonderful combination' and footwork in the mud. The score Was six to nil at the end of the first half. Batten scored four times, Sinvmis five, Hannaford one and Caesar one.
MANAIA 4 y. AUROA 0 When these teams met in the first round at Auroa a draw was the result. Therefore, it was with keen in.tiegejst that (soccer \entbugiasfis were awaiting the return match, particularly as both were the leading teams in the championship. The conditions were ideal for good football and a fast clashing game was played. Manual showed marked superiority in ad departments. Although on the day’s play, it was hard to individualise, W. Budd, Manaia’s goalkeeper, was deserving oi special liientipu. His clean qtj'icfc clearances were a 'treat to wateij. Manaia yyon the toss. Auroa’s attack was cleared by lietteridge. S. Polard obtained possession arid transferred to Denman who centred nicely, but Bradford intercepted arid relieved with "a long kick. A free kick awarded Manaia was taken by Bettefidge, who shot a beauty through the opposing goalkeeper’s hands and found the liet. Manaia F, Auroa 0. Auroa returned to the attack and a forward rush was stopped in Manaia’s goal area by Bettericlge. J. Hartley with a fine run down the left wing took a cross shot, but Budd secured and sent the bail to Iris forwards. Denman passed to Marvin near goal, but Swale relieved. H. Pollard returned the leather and Bradford cleared with a short kick. Mugger iclge passed to centre where from a scramble B. Pollard found tlie net, aciciing Manaia’s second goal. Undaunted by tips reverse Auroa was making the pace and hotly- attacked. Betteridge and Co. stood the test. Freakley with a solo run passed to H. Hartley, but Budd collected and drop kicked to Butler. McCook headed to Sandfojd who took a long shot, but it went wide. At this stage p good deal of mjdfield play resulted and half time found Mu.naia -> 4-uroa 0. Qn Tdsuriiptioii Manaia. immediately swooped down to Auroa’ s goal and good combination among the towards enabled Denman!'to centre to B. Pollard. The latter with a first timer scored trie third goal. Thatcher, McCook ancl Hartley made several combined efforts to penetrate Manaia’s defence to result in goal kicks. Repeatedly their forwards in turn shot, but Budd was home. Kilpatrick headed a dangerous rush, but O'Connor' intercepted and play was carried to Qenmaii, thence to Marvin, when Freakley relieved with a long downfiekt kick and Muggeridge, with a run down the left wing obtained possession and sent in a swift long shot beating the Auroa.goalie and. scoring Manaia’s fourth goal. In-the-con-cluding stages Auroa made strenuous efforts to score, but its attack, though carried ringht into the goal area, Jacked finish.' Time sounded' with' Auroa attacking. Three or four players received minor injuries during the play, but soon recovered. Mr. VV. Adams, ot Hawera, controlled the game.
