HAWERA PIPE BAND.
PARADE AND COMPETITIONS. Some months ago the suggestion to form a pipe hand in Hawera was taken up with enthusiasm, and the preliminary steps taken showed that there were prospects of making the band a strong one and an institution of which the town might be proud. The band was well supported, and mainly’through the efforts of Pipe Major J. E. Crawford, of Elthnm, has made excellent progress, and now numbers 11. The pipers are also so far advanced that they have been able to give performances and parade oh the streets, so that people may know what they have been doing. Pipe Major Crawford has been most indefatigable in his help, and has come doivn every Saturday since the formation of the band to coach the members. On Saturday night the hand paraded in High street and gave a series of selections. It then returned to the bandroom, and members took part in the first of a series of piping competitions for a medal presented by Pine Maj or Crawford. The judge (Mr Gower, of Eltham) complimented the pipers on their good work, and added that it was remarkable the progress thev had made, which was a distinct credit to the good coaching, of Pine Maior Crawford. He had heard solos and combined work, and said in both +ho hand had gone ahe Ad very well indeed. Mr flower made his awards as follows; Pipe Serge ant Henson 1, Piper Miller. 2, Piper Fletcher 3.
