WAR IN MOROCCO

COMMUNIST OPPOSITION

MANY ARRESTS MADE

MORE TROUBLE FOR SPAIN. BY CABLE— PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. PARIS, June 19. At the Government’s request the Chamber, by 525 votes to 32, postponed sine die the' Communist demand to interpellate the Government on the situation in Morocco. The Socialists voted with the Government. The Socialists having agreed to interpellate on Morocco next week, the Communists, seeking to force the issue between the Socialists and the Government, gave notice of a proposal to interpellate to-day. They, quoted a London telegram saying that Abdel Krim had made peace overtures, to France and Spain through England and Italy. M. Briand (Minister for Foreign Affairs), demanding the postponement of the interpellation sine die, declared it was an insult to suppose that if an honourable opportunity for peace were offered the Government would not have listened to it or allowed further bloodshed in Morocco. The vote was taken amid Communist cries of “Murderers,” “Liars,’’ “Down with War,”

After a meeting of Cabinet the Foreign Minister stated that the Government had discussed Communist propaganda and had decided on a policy towards the militant section of the Communist Party, which daily was corresponding with Abdel Krjm and encouraging him to resist, assuring him that the majority of France was opposed to a continuance of military operations. Le Matin announces that 120 arrests have been made in Paris and the provinces in pursuance of the measures for the suppression of Communist propaganda iii regard to Morocco. The .Premier (M. Painleve) will shortly bring up the question in the Chamber of raising Parliamentary immunity in respect to two Communist leaders who are deputies to enable a prosecution. A telegram from Tangier says the situation in the western Spanish zone is more serious. Riff contingents are concentrating at various points along the Ceuta-Tetuan-Laraehe line.
