June 19At the Police Court the Campbell Ehrenfried Company and two of its officers, Sidney Horace Abell, and Albert Ernest Bollard, were each charged with making false income Six charges were preferred. The court imposed fines of £IOO and costs on each of the six charges, two against the company, and two against each, of the other defendants. Counsel for the defence said that they had peaded guilty as the Act was all embracing, and it was hard to resist it, even if the offences were only negligence. At the time of the offence, in 1920 and 1921, conditions were abnormal. The managing directors were absent and had no knowledge of the offence. The company’s managers followed a commercial system which evidently did n ot conform to the Land and Income Tax Act or the Department.
