The House of Commons sat until 6.23 this morning and concluded the committee stage of the Finance Bill, which was reported to tlio House. An amendment moved by Miss Wilkinson (Labour) to exclude artificial silk from the tax was rejected by ISO votes to 82. An amendment bv Mr G. M. Gillett 'Labour) to reduce the duty on articles made wholly of silk or artificial silk, from 33. 1-3 per cent, to 10 per cent, was rejected by 170 votes to SO. Replying to Major Harvey, Sir W. .Toynson 1 licks (Home Secretary) said that no communication had yet been received from the Dominions directly referring to the resolution on the subice! of the nationality of British women who marry aliens, which was moved in Parliament in February. He did not know that similar resolutions were moved in the Commonwealth Parliament. Be had tried to get a genera) agreement on the subject of nationality, and it would he wrong to introduce the Bill in the meantime. He would see whether further dispatch could be sent to the Dominions asking for the necessary information. EASTBOURNE BY-ELECTION. The Easthourn by-election resulted. — Sir Reginald Flail (Unionist) 12.741; Hnroourt Johnston (Liberal), 5386: T. S. Williams (Labour), 2696.
