TARANAKI COMPETITION. KAPONGA (2) v. STRATFORD (1). The first round of the Taranaki Hookey Association’s shield competition was continued yesterday, the only fixture being the Kaponga v. Stratford game at Stratford, where an even contest resulted in a win for Kaponga by two goals to one. Play was fast and, though not up to first-class club standard, augured well for the form which should rule later in the competition. During' the first half play ranged from end to end. leaving territorial honours evenly divided, but though many attempts at the goal from the penalty area were made bv both sides, no score was registered. Early in the second spell Dudding goaled for Stratford with a penalty awarded for obstruction. Kaponga retaliated with a determined rylly. and W. Bennie, making a dash into the home quarter, (sent the ball infield to Kehely, who passed two defenders and found the net. In the bullv-off Kehely secured and sent to IV. Bennie, who, after a great run from midfield, heat the goalie and put Kaponga a goal in the lead. During remaining play both defences were tested, hut no further score was registered.
