MOPE ABOUT BOOKMAKING

(To. the Editor). Sir, —In your paper of the 16th inst. appeared a- letter written by “Old Licensee,” which it is claimed was written in the public interest. Now, sir, as there are many old licensees in Manaia, I think in fairness to them your correspondent .should sign his name. Any writer who will attack our po'ice under a nom de plume is a cur, and reminds'one of a dog harking behind a fence. If “Old Licensee” were writing for the good of the public one might pay a little attention to his letter ; bat when a mam takes the Press to get one home over a personal matter, then I think, to say the least of him. he is hitting below -the be’t. Will “Old Licensee” tel.i us: (I) Was lie ever milking - for a supposed bookmaker? (2) Was he the plaintiff or tho defendant in a recent court action with a supposed bookmaker? I liate been a resident of this distriet for thirty years, and have never heard of any one particular bookmaker and liis agents; and it is up to “Old Licensee” to ted us who he is driving at and what is behind liis letter. T have always found the police of Hawera and district to. he good' conscientious officers, and I think to attack them under an assumed name is worse than hookmaking. If I wanted to pull a public officer to pieces I would at least sign my name and not cast a slpr on other old licensees. —I am. etc., OLD LICENSER No. 2. Haw Ora, Juno 18.
