TAKING SOUNDINGS

SECOND OFFICER’S EVIDENCE. CBY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. WANGANUI, June 17. The nautical inquiry into the stranding of the Cyrena was continued to-day, when the principal topic was the soundings taken when the steamer stranded, and the second officer (Air. Adams) gave details of these. The first sounding, which was abreast of the forward winch, was eighteen feet This was maintained to a. point well abaft the foremast, where the three fathom mark on the line came oiit of the water. This would be some sixtyfour feet from the forecastle head. Beneath No. 3 hold and the winch lie got less than seventeen l’eet and more than sixteen feet six inches. The next depth 'was sixteen feet between the winch and the main mast abreast the mainmast, and. the same depth was found abreast the winch. At the mainmast sixteen feet was recorded. At the break of the noop he got eighteen feet. He also obtained soundings on the whole at less than seventeen feet for a distance of eighty feet, the-.low-est being less than sixteen feet. There was less than 56 feet between his first and final calls of seventeen feet. The witness also took soundings at 2 p.m. on Sunday over the forecastle head. He got eighteen feet and abreast of the foremast on the port side twelve feet. He took other soundings, but those mentioned were the greatest and least respectively. The inquiry was adjourned till tomorrow morning.

TO-DAY’S PROCEDINGS

WANGANUI, June 18

The Cyrena inquiry has now extended into the fourth day. Five witnesses have been called, and there are still eleven more. The inquiry will probably ■on'‘lude some time next week. The evidence has largely resolved itself into a- question of soundings and hearings, involving computation of figures.
