®— (From Our Own Correspondent.) S-M. COURT. There was but a short sitting of the S.M. Court here on Friday, just a few debt cases being dealt with. Judgment by default was given for plaintiff in the following cases: Magley v. A. Pennington. £4 8s: Pa tea Borough Council v. Te Papawhero. £8 6s 2d; J. Hickey v. J. Mercer, 9s; Patea Butchery' Co. v. H. Murdoch. 19s; same v. E. A. Gardner, £8 IBs 2d. FIRE ENGINE FUND. The bazaar in aid of the motor live engine fund of the local Fire Brigade was held on Friday' last, and notwithstanding the wretched weathfer there was a large attendance of the public. The various stalls were kept very busyright up to closing time, and . good business was done. About 10 o’clock the hall was cleared for dancing, and to. the music of the Serenaders a very enjoyable finish was given to the day’s proceedings. A GOOD SAVE.

A prompt piece of work by the local Fire Brigade on Sunday at noon prevented wlmt ©might have been a disastrous fire. The building occupied by Air H. Boagey as a carpenter’s shop, and situated at the corner of Egmont and Rutland streets, was discovered on lire by a passer-by. who at once gave the alarm, and the outbreak was subdued before much damage was done. The origin is a mystery. At the time of the outbreak the town was in the throes of a “violent southerly,” and had the fire once got the upper hand it is difficult to say where it would have ended.
