Received June 16, 12.25 p.m. PEKING, June 15. : The British Note replying to the Chinese Note regarding the Hankow riot©, points out the inaccuracies therein, and states the facts in connection with the riots, from which it would be seen, that- the volunteers showed great, resbiUint. They refrained from firing even when the mob charged, almost on their bayonqts. the' Note says,-that, foreigners were defending their lives against, a murderous mob, and does not admit the responsibility of the British authorities, who 'were unable to obtain .prompt protection from: tire Chinese authorities and were- obliged to act- for themselves. It reminds the Government o-f repeated warnings of the. responsibility that China incurs in allowing the present anti-British, agitation to proceed unchecked. It also, refers to the dissemination of pamphlets, givingmost mendacious 1 accounts of the happenings, and - concludes by stating the consequences .are very- dangerous, for the people’s disposition is uncertain. One explosion may be followed by others, with deplorable results. The largest demonstration in Peking since the crisis was attended by students, merchants, 1 shopkeepers and workmen, who paraded and demanded that the Government .sever relations with Britain and instruct Hsiaoyaonan Tupan Supoh to send- troops to take hack Hankow concession from the British.
• It is understood that the Foreign Minister Shenjuihan returned to his duties to-day.
