COUNTRY PAPERS.
WIRELESS A COMPETITOR. 3Y CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, June 15. The secretary’s report to be presented at the annual meeting of the Country Press Association draws attention to the disabilities under which country newspapers suffer in competition with broadcasting. In the past the newspaper has been the centre from which the* rural population obtained news, and the proprietors spent money freely in obtaining such news, but to-day inmost centres'the local barber is equipped with a receiving set and is able to post news practically without expense long before the proprietors, who are paying urgent rates for the same information, receive, it by telegraph. Amongst the subjects to be discussed at the annual, meeting will be the provision of a special broadcasting .service for the country press. Apropos of this the eitv newspapers and the public generally are keenly interested in wireless transmission of news between West Australia and the Eastern States. At the present time transcontinental telegrams take as long a time to transmit as do the cables between London and Sydney.
