The monthly meeting of the Waimate West Demonstration Farm, committee was held at Marinin yesterday. Mr. J F. Stevenson % (deputy chairman) presided, there being also present: Messrs W. H. Le Fleming, J. Leslie, J. S. Mackay, and A. G. Paterson (manager). Apo’ogies for absence were received from Messrs J. W. Deem (chairman), R. Dunn, E. Long, A. Ganilin, and E. J. Betts. SCHOOL OF INSTRUCTION,
Air. Stevenson gave a reminder that die rol] .of those attending the farm school of instruction would he called at 11 a.m. on Monday, in the Oddfellows’ Ha'l. Classes were being held daily throughout the week, and as lectures were beinp- given by experts hi agricultural and genera 1 , farming subjects they could be depended upon to prove of great interest and value to those engaged in the industry. He hoped that big attendances would reward the efforts being made to make cne school of value to farmers of the district, and urged all committee members to he present and also to induce as many others as possible to attend. MANAGER’S REPORT. The farm manager (Mr. A. G. Paterson) reported that the pastures were looking in fair condition for the time of the year. The young grass was growing well and was grazing eight calves. He recommended that the cows he put on it, as if left till they came ip the growth, would he too far advanced. The cows appeared in fairly good condition. All were dry except two or three, which were being milked once daily, and three twice daily. All paddodks had been tripod harrowed once, and most of the fences had hee n cut and the boxthorn trimmings burnt. Most of the mangolds had heen pu'leu and shawed. The report was adopted. The installation of a shut-off to the windmill, which Mr. Forbes, Alton, had offered to put in free of charge for demonstration purposes, was authorised on the recommendation of the manager. Tlie manager was also authorised to engage a man to replace his assistant who, he reported, was leaving. GENERAL.
Regarding the question of cubing, the chairman said the matter would have to be thoroughly gone into and tests maintained, so that only cows Paving a certain standard would, be kept. Further consideration would, however, be given to the question at a fuller meeting. The question of joining the Pig Breeders’ Association was mentioned, but as only grades were kept it was decided to take no action at present. Accounts amounting to £99 were passed for payment.
