Heralded by several -showers, which for the twenty-four hours preceding 9 a-.rn. accounted for a rainfall of 75 points, the eornpa,rativel.y mild weather experienced of late to-day gave way to a cold southerly gale, accompanied h.y driving rain. The wind, which in tlio early morning 'blew from the west, veered round to> the south' early in the day, and while being bitterly cold and accompanied by driving rain, increased in .strength, until by mid-day it had assumed the proportions! of a- typical •‘southerly .buster.’’ Despite the shelter of verandahs, several shopkeepers on the north side of High .‘street found i.t advisable to keep their doors closed, and consequently, with the few people abroad in the streets, the town had a somewhat deserted appearance.
