SURF BOAT CAPSIZED.
A SAILOR DROAVNED
OFFICER’S GALLANT RESCUE EFFORT, (BY TELEGRAPH—PEERS ASSOCIATION. NAPIER, June 11. Further details of the drowning fatality at Akitio show that the drowned man was John Carney, married, with two children, living at -Wellington. The accident occurred a mile from the ship and about one and a half miles from the shore. The second mate, Mr Henderson, who was in charge of the swamped boat, made heroic efforts to save Carney, extending over 20 minutes. Three times the deceased was secured, hut on each occasion lie was washed from the rescuer’s grip, the man practically being drowned in Henderson’s arms. The latter was all in when the rescue boat arrived, but the body had then sunk, and was not recovered.
