ROOT CROP COMPETITIONS.
AUROA CENTRE. Considerable intei-est has been taken by the members ol the Auroa branch of the Farmers’ Union in the competitions for root crops. The number of entries was satisfactory, but unfortunately some of these were Withdrawn, and 15 were left in the competitions. The number therefore was the same as at Otakehp. There were no really outstanding crops, but several were very good. Amongst these should be mentioned the mangolds shown by Messrs Hooper and Brown, which secured first and second places, also the crop grown by Mr Kirk. In the carrots this position was reversed, and Mr Kirk topped the list by a small margin. The party was hospitably entertained at luncheon by the branch, Mrs W. Lyndon looking after the members at the hall,' and at the end of the day afternoon tea was kindly supplied by Mrs Langlands. Both these thoughtful kindnesses were much appreciated by all. • . Before dispersing Mr Lyndon, president of the branch, thanked Messrs Deem and Glasson for so _ kindly and effectively officiating as judges and for giving the competitors so much good advice, which would be very valuable to them all. He said he knew that some of the crops were not good, but that no doubt would be an object lesson to competitors. He _ also expressed the hearty appreciation felt by all for the keen ‘ and valued interest taken by the Hawera Star in the work of the farmer. He said he could safely say he knew no pape'r which did more for the farming community. On his motion a hearty vote of thanks was carried to the judges and to the Star. In reply, Mr Deem expressed his pleasure at being present, and remarked on the enthusiasm of the members who had come round to see the judging the crops. He congratulated the winners, and said he hoped the others would endeavour to improve next year and that there would be even greater enthusiasm in the future. He said he would like to endorse the remarks of the president in regard to the Star, and said the interest taken by that newspaper must be very helpful to all farmers. In conclusion, lie said he hoped Auroa would continue to show keen enthusiasm, and that the standard of the crops would be largely raised in the future. Hearty votes of thanks were carried bv acclamation, to Mrs Lyndon and to Mrs Langlands for their thoughtful kindness to members. The results of the competitions werte as below:
