TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.

AIONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the •Taranaki Education Board was held at New Plymouth yesterday. There were present : . Alessrs S. G. Smith (ehairman), P. J. H. AVhite, A. Lees, R, J, Deare. Rev. J. L. A. Kayll, and H. Dempsey. RELIEVING APPOINTAIENTS’ The chairman reported the following relieving appointments: Miss E. AV. Kirk, first assistant, Auroa; Airs. E. Cottrell, head teacher, Kapuni • Miss At. Olsen, second assistant. Knponga; Miss E. N. O’Sullivan, sole teacher, Mata'; and Air. P. S. Taylor, head teacher, Alalioe. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. The* following were granted leave of absence: Aliss E. Alnllon, assistant, Te Kiri'; Alt . Jas. Bai'.ie. head teacher. Kaponga; and Airs. A. M. Evans, head teacher. Otakeho.

The resignation' of Aliss D. AVoulfe, assistant at Douglas, was accepted. it was recommended that, as the following had obtained certificates, their appointments be made’ permanent: Miss" A. Fretney. assistant at Alatapu, and Air, D. W. Longley, sole teacher, AVaiongona. MANUAL AND TECHNICAL. The Manual and Technical Committee recommended the following: That application be made to the Department for a grant for the necessary furniture and equipment for the science classes at Alanaia and Opunake district high schools.; that Air. Sunderland be informed that the board is unable to take any action regarding further payment- to him for, recent services: that application be made to the Department for a grant for the erection and equipment of a suitable manual building at Opunake. (This latter was in view of the fact that during the absence of Mr. G . E_ Reed the. work at Hawera, Eltham, and Alanaia was carried out by Air. T. Sunderland.) ’ FINANCE. The Finance and Building Committee made recommendations as follow: That the question of suppy of tables and chairs for infant rooms was being dealt with and that the application from the Al.angatokj Schoo] Committee would be dealt with in its order of urgency, and that the committee he advised at-corcL ingly; that the Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute be informed that the board would arrange for teachers’ salaries to be payable on the last school day prior to vacations, provided that the necessary grant be so made available by the Department, and that the Department be asked to make the necessary arrangements ; that the teacher at the Alanaia school be informed that the board’s architect had been instructed to forward the desks asked for in.his letter of May 26. 1925; that the Auroa School Committee he advised that the board’s architect had been requested to report on the proposed alterations to the cloakroom, and that the board regretted that it hacl no funds available out of which it might purchase the 100 escallonia exoniensis plants applied for; that the Auroa School Committee he advised that, in view of the. large amount expended by the committee on improvements, the boaid approved of a grant of £2 10s .towards the cost, of repairs to the shelter shed and would be pleased to apply to the Department - for a subsidy oh the sum raised for schoo! improvements on completion of the prescribed forms. REPORTS.

The architect leported that although a grant had been made he had not been able to put the work in hand in connection with the Pembroke new school. The matter of transferring the site was receiving attention. The attendance officer reported visiting 82 schools, the attendance being very good. ; In connection with the Kin mini school it was reported that Mr. Lees had made an inquiry into the accommodation, with the result that the schoo'\ had been found extremely inadequate for the attendance. Tt- was decided to make an application to the Department for the necessary grant. In connection with the" Opunak© school, it was brought forward that the school was taxed to the utmost, and, moreover, had a waiting list of ten pupils ox school age. The board agreed that the situation was serious, and it was decided to apply for a grant to make extensions. A telegram was received from Mrs. Massey expressing her appreciation of the board's message of condolence in her recent bereavement.
