At the annual meeting of the Patea Licensing Committee to-day, the chairman (Mr J;- S. Barton, S.M.) deprecated the attitude of some owners and licensees 1 of hotels who, after being given notice by the health officer to cary out certain work, failed to do so before the committee’s annual meeting, with the result that the committee had' to meet again in order to finally deal with applications for license renewals l . - One case before the committee that day had brought out the neglect of an owner to attend to a fire escape (a most necessary thing), the necessity for repairing which had been pointed out by the health officer on May 19. That the carpenter had not yet attended to the matter was not a sufficient excuse. Mr Barton said that one remedy which would make for the speedy completion of the work would be to allow costs for the committeemen, police-and health officer if, owing to the applicant’s neglect, a second meeting had to be called.
