A factor in Lord, Derby Os proposal to sell Rootle, which came into the possession- of his family during the eighteenth, century, is- that many leases are for 999 years. It is a question whether the corporation is wise to- invest in ground/' rents which cannot increase in value fo-r -a thousand years. Lord Derby, -a month a,go, sold practically all his property in south-east Lancashire, covering five thousand acres from Bury, Manchester, to Sail fond, to Mr. S. H. Green. It is rumoured that the sale- yielded a million. The- Bury estates -have been in the poisisewsirin o>f the Stanleys since the Battle of B'osworth, in 1485, when Lord Stanley; forsook Richard a,fid ride-d with Henry VII, and was rewarded. with- the lands: of -the Lancashire families who- -sided with Richard.—A.us.-N.Z.
