Received June 8, 8.5 a.m. NEW YORK, June 6._ While some regions east of the Rocky Mountains still report unseasonable ,ow temceratures, and rain lias brought some lelief in parts of lllino.s. Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, the east is still sweltering under insufferable At- New York the wave reached the crest on Saturday with a temperature of 96 degrees. The terrific beat wave which has oppressed the eastern, ihailf of > the United States foil’ the last six days had up till this morning, together with the accompany! ug e-tp-rms, -taken toll of 23S lives. Ninety-eight- deaths were reported yesterday. The heat wave is the most disastrous one that has ever occurred duiing June -since the weather bureau has taken records. Temperature records everywhere were broken. At New York the mercury leapt to 97 degrees, Washington, 99, Elmira- (New York) 101, and Hagerstown (Maryland) 102. The mills- have been closed in New England, and schools in various cities and numerous, Government and other offices have been closed. Great anxiety is felt lest the forests- be burned and crops,' worth millions of dollars destroyed. ' This has been predicted unless rain soon- falls. The heat wa-vei hasi broken in Pennsylvania, where -a rainstorm brought a decrease of 15 degrees in temperature in two hours. The same relief is predicted in other sections within fortyeight hour's, but most parts, including New York, are- expected to- continue to swelter for a day and a half. Scenes • of indescribable .suffering were witnessed in the tenement districts', sleepless, victims crowding the parks, fire escapes and roofs in .search of relief. In other sections the authorities, fearing a water famine, are arresting. anyone sprinkling lawns. Curious features of the heat wave include the derailment of a train, fortunately without casualties, in New York, New Jersey, due to the expansion of the rails, while the sun fried an egg in eight minutes on, a pavement in Cleveland.
LONDON SUFFERS TOO. LONDON, June 7. There were four deaths from heat tin London as a climax to the loveliest spring.
