WANGANUI v. NEW PLYMOUTH. WIN FOR. COLLEGIATE SCHOOL. After a fast and interesting en•fcountei: Characterised l jby" beautiful goal kicking and brilliant passing manoeuvres, Wanganui Collegiate School yesterday defeated New Plymouth Boys’ High Schoo] by 26 points to 11. The match, which. wag, played at Wanganui, was favoured with fine weather, although a bleak wind swept across the field of play. The scores were a fair indication of. the merits of the teams on the day’s play, but New Plymouth's total would have assumed a different aspect had it not been for their erratic passing at crucial moments and the deadly tackling of their opponents. The teams were as follows :
Collegiate School. —Backs: Bunny, Jull, Scanlan, Ormond, Wilson, Latham, and Gardner; forwards: Bernau, Josephs, Cleland, Betlieil, Henley, Wilson, and Sliaw. High School.—Backs : Grant, Medley, K. Fookes, Pease, Fletcher, Galbraith, and H. Fookes; forwards: Read, Roberts, fificCnllum, IFietcher, Wetere, S’. Fookes, Crawford, and Abraham. At the inception the visitors took full advantage of the initial kick, and attacked strenuously until Scanlan relieved with a good kick. A scrum ensued near half-way, and Gardner got the ball away smartly to Latham fo Wilson, who was caught in possession. Immediately afterwards an infringement by a High School player allowed Bunny to open the local team’s account with a good kick from a few yards outside the twenty-five. Wanganui 3, New Plymouth 0. Concerted' movements saw the New Plymouth boys assume the offensive, but Ormond relieved with a kick that found touch near half-way. Wanganui’s respite was, however, only momentary, for Read headed a rush on their citadel. The rearguard instituted several. prq : mi sing movements, but the visitors could not penetrate the defence. Latham eventually broke avvav from loose play in nentraj territory, and transferred to Ormond, who passed in-field again to Latham, •'the. last mentioned player being pushed' out when a score, looked likely. Wanganui set rip a- sustained attack, and Bernau secured 'from loose forward play in New Plymouth’s twenty-five and long passed- to Ormond on the left wing, who dashed o'ver the line in a handy position. Bunny added the major points. Wanganui 8 New Plymouth 0. * . { * The next score came twenty minutes after the commencement. Bernau headed a rush in the direction of New. Plymouth’s goal, and, from a loose melee near half-way, Gardner set liis backs in motion, the ball going t-o Latham, to Wilson, to Scanlan, who cut in beautifully and made an excellent opening for Jull, who raced K. Fookes over the last thirty yards and touched down in the corner. Bunnyhs kick missed. Wanganui 11, New Plymouth 0. H. Fookes worked Shis backs on several occasions in the play that, eventuated, and it was only erratic passing that prevented them from scoring. The visitors were having the better of the tight forward' play, but oiji the other hand Collegers backs were superior, and were always a dangerous factor to contend with. The New Plymouth forwards attacked strenuously, and H. Fookes sent the half through the hands of all the backs to Pease, who beat off all opposition, and was within a few yards from the line wheq. Ormond grassed him from behind. The ball came across to the opposite wing, and Latham, after a splendid dash down the touch line, was pushed out at the (corner flag. Medley shortly afterwards was again sent away for a likely try, hut Bunny ivas equal to. the occasion and upset him with a beautiful low tackle. ' Just before halftime was announced Collegiate School were penalised immediately in. front of the goal-posts*, hut Crawford’s kick was lamentably poor.
Play surged up and down between the twenty-fives, New Plymouth’s first score coming several minutes after, the teams had returned to the field. After working the blind side ineffectively on several occasions H. Fookes got the bal]; from a scrummage, afid it >yent out to Medley/ who capped a pretty movement - by diving over in a handy position. Fletcher failed with the kick. Wanganui 11, Ne.w Plymouth 3. ; * This sudden reverse on the p_a!'t of the whites stung the visitors action, mild in the play that ejisiied they knocked at the door repeatedly. The next score for College emafiated from a loose passing rush instituted by Latham, who took the hall nicely from a shorty punt, and transferred it to Scan lan, to Jull, who got over, B.un,ny made no mistake with the kick. Wanganui 16, New Plymouth 3, New Plymouth rallied again. Galbraith came up first and retrieved the leather after he had knocked the ball on several times. A fine sprint carried him over the line in a handy position, and the pot presented no difficulty t, Fletcher. Wanganui 16, New Plymouth 8.
Matters at this stage looked most promising for the visitors, who, encouraged by their recent success, tackled: time and again, Medley and Jull being within an ace of registering tries. Their backs were working with better precision, and play swung firstly to one side and then the other. However, they were gradually driven down to the opposite end of the field, Gardner snapped the bal] away from the serum to Latham, to Ormond. The half came round fast to accept an easy pass from Ormond, who got up again to receive the return. The wing took the hall at top, beating off all opposition, and ran round between the posts. Sean lan raised tlie bal| over the bar. Wanganui 21, New Plymouth 8. There were thirteen minutes to time, but lit this stag© the final 'issue was' a foregone conclusion, although the New Plymouth boys were untiring m their efforts to reduce the leeway. They played attractive football, and once Crawford had a. well-directed kick from ten yards inside half-way, but it fell short. After the visitors had! applied the pressure for a lengthy period, Fletcher got the ball from the scrum in College’s twenty-five, and sent it out to Pease, who in-passed to K. Fookes, who dived over well out. Wanganui 21, New Plymouth 11. .Ju.st before the fin a; whistle sounded, Gardner secured the ball from a loose scrum in neutral territory, and sente it out to Latham, to Wilson, to Scan!an, who cut in prettily before transferring to Ormond. The wing made about ten yards, and passed to Latham a s he was going down. The last mentioned player swerved in-field to cut out S. Fookes—who dived at him —and raced round behind tlie posts. Soanlan piloted the ball over the cross-bar, and the final'scdte read: Wanganui 26, New Plymouth 11. Mr. R. P. London controlled the game.
