TO-DAY’S SPORTS
AFTERNOON PLAY. FOOTBALL AND HOCKEY. Tin bitingly cold weather, holiday sportsi fixtures were played in Taranaki centres tO’-day. In all cases attendances suffered from-, the weather, but the enthusiasm of the players was in no way lessened. Results available by the time The Star went to press are given below.
WEDNESDAY RUGBY.
CITY A (9) V, CITY B (0). Very great interest was taken in the meeting of the two Wednesday Rugby City teams, which eventuated this afternoon at the Hawera Showgrounds. The weather conditions were very unfavourable, a strong southerly blowing right down the ground. A\s played in maroon and B’s in black and gold. Play was last from the outset/ the advantage lying with the A’s, who played with the wind. They got- on a good -rush, and in a handy position a penalty was awarded them, and Perrin kicked a nice goal.' A’s 3, B’s 0. B’s (yellow) defended well- and keenly, and although play was mostly in their territory, reds could not score. They rushed down field again, and once more had a penalty kick, which Perrin safely negotiated between the posts. A’s (6), B’s (0).
From the kick-out yellows in a fine rush went up field, Cheer in the van, and put maroons on the defensive, but Kururangi with a nice run and pass relieved.
From the opening of the second spell yellows, taking advantage of the wind, pressed their opponents hard. They had a nice dribbling rush, and in the 25 Hayes had a shot at goal, which failed. Again a penalty was given them, and the kick nearly succeeded. Reds cleared with a powerful rush, but back came yellows, and in a good position Miller made a nice dash and almost got over, being well tackled by Purser. Reds again cleared with a forward rush, headed by Foster and Trotter. They tried a passing rush, but the handling was not good, ancl away went yellows in a loose rush. The maroon backs fumbling, yellows went over the- line, but ■ lost the ball, and A■s forced. From tlie kick-out- A’s went upheld in a determined rush, and when near thel line Foster nearly gqt across. A free kick gave B’s relief, but A’s kept up the pressure, and just failed .to score, and B’s forced. Play was for a time - in- midfield till, with, a fine dash, B’s attacked .strongly. A’s came upfield and looked dangerous until Jury-marked nicely and sent them back. Then. A hacks tried to open up tlie- play, Kururangi being prominent in attack. Too hard kicking by Bi forwards resulted in a force .'down, and a good c-hance was lost. Just afterwards near the line Jury had ai ish.ot at goal, but failed, and upfield went the ■ A’s ' till checked by Millar. Back came B’s, and twice in succession, they rushed downfield and lost a try by .hard kicking. They kept up the pressure and were in the opqpsing quarters most of the time They rushed across the line, but A’s forced and ai try was saved. Hands made a fine run up the line, and when blocked passed ‘ in. and Goodwin, securing," made the run of the match and scored a. really good try. The kick failed. A’s 9, BL 0. Downfield went yellows, but the defence. was sound. B’s were pressing on the line as the ball went out, and time was called with- 'result City-A 9 v. City B 0. Mr. H. Whittington was referee. DEWAR SHIELD. K ALONG A GOING WELL. In the annual- seven-asside Rugby tournament lor the Dewar Shield, at New Plymouth., the Kapongu. team has reached the third round,, having defeated Star .by three points to nil in a hard second round game.
