BORUUGH COUNCIL,

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Pa tea Borough Council was held on Monday evening last, Mr. P. S. Finiayson' (Mayor) presiding. Permission wa s granted Mr.' Beer to split certain fire wood 1 in Scotland Street. Apletter was received from, the National Dairy Association with reference to the visit of some of the delegates during the conference to he held at Hawera at the end of this month. A letter was read from the Prime Minister with reference to a national memorial to the late Mr. 1\ . I'. Massey.

The. Major said he hoped Pa tea would not he behind in this matter, for there was no doubt that, apart altogether from politics, Mr. Massey was a much ueloved man.

Or. Christensen thought the occasion warranted a grant from the council, and that a public meeting be called. He, like his Worship, would be sorry if Pate a failed.

It was resolved to ©oil a public meeting to consider the matter. The question of re-entry on a certain leasehold property was discussed at great length. Or. Jones moving and Or. Thomson seconding “that- further consideration of the matter be held over till a ispeoial meeting of the council, to he held oh Monday, June 15, when al] correspondence and other details be laid before the council.” In moving the resolution Cr. Jones said he objected to this lessee being singled out, when they al| knew that there were other lessees in no better position. Then, again, he understood that this man’s rent was paid up.

Cr. Christensen said lie objected to further delay over the matter. This lessee had not carried out the conditions of his lease, and the council’s building inspector had reported ad-

versely about the condition of the property. Cr. Honeyfield said lie had . been a councillor for a great number of years, and this property had throughout the period been a bugbear to the council. He considered the motion was in the right direction. The motion was carried.

The Mayor reported o n behalf of the sub-committee appointed to go into the question of necessary repairs to the public library building. The committee had instructed the engineer to rearrange the lighting system, which at present was had. The report Was adopted and tenders are to he called for the work.

The Mayor reported that the subcommittee appointed to clea; with the matter of the seating accommodation in the circle of the Town Hall had interviewed the lessee of. the hall on the matter, and he had agreed to cover one seat with material'approved of by the council and submit the work to"the

council for report. If the work was satisfactory, he was prepared to recover all the seats. —-It was decided to accept the' offer of the lessee in this matter.

The Patea Hospital .board notified the council that its contribution for the current year was £55 2s sd, and it was resolved to pay the amount. The electrical engineer reported that 15,291 units had been generated at the hydro station during the past month, and that during ’the same period' 1,440,000 gallqiis of water had been pumped, with an electrical cons'.'.fhption of 2886 units.
