KY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT
Received June 1, 12.5 p.m. LONDON, May 31. The Daily News says that Japan’s new aircraft carrier, the Akagi, 29,600 tons displacement, with a speed of 28 knots, can accommodate .fifty aeroplanes. It will be armed with, , ten eight-inch guns, sixteen 4.7 quickfirers, and is virtually a light battle-cruiser besides an aircraft carrier. Her hitting power .surpasses that of the British, French and American cruisers now building. In the Akagi, like the cruiser Furutaka, the Japanese have trumped all rivals, increasing its fighting power to the tonnage, and producing ships delivering heavier blows than the other navies with larger vessels. Britain’s largest aircraft carrier, the Eagle, is 4200 tons smaller and four knots slower, rind has only nine six-inch and six four-inch guns.—Sydney Sun Cable.
